Ο Γεωργός ο Γίλης απ' το Χαμ
Few fragments of the history of the Little Kingdom exist any more. But saved, quite by accident, is a narrative which sheds light on its origin-or rather not a narrative, a legend, so to speak, for it is evident that it is a later compendium, full of supernatural events which do not come from the sober Chronicles, but from the folk-songs to which the anonymous author frequently refers. For him, the events he records already belong to a distant past, but it seems that he himself lived in the territory of the Little Kingdom. His geographical knowledge (which is nothing to write home about) concerns only that region, while he seems to be unaware of the rest of the country to the north and west. One reason for translating this curious story from island Latin into modern UK language is perhaps that it allows us a glimpse into the life of an obscure period within Britain's history - and further illuminates the origins of some difficult place names. But some may also be fascinated by its hero and his adventures.
