What connects comics and cinema? The presence of the image. What separates them? The advantage of movement that has given the undisputed primacy in the modern arena of pop(ular) culture to the latter. Or is it not? In every system of symbols and in every system of representation there is in fact only one movement: that of the mind, which invests the stimulus with the irresistible fire of imagination - the one that always mediates the emergence of any personal “meaning”, in other words the metaphorical transubstantiation and integration of the stimulus within the framework of (inevitably) subjective consciousness. This fundamental background encompasses a whole system of apparent contradictions in the historical interaction of comics and cinema. The comic book seems to be closer to the narrative of the novel, as a transition from the image-lessness of the written text to its animated (cinematic) version.
